History:
In 1994, Teens-N-Flight began as a high school magnet program designed to assist the Duval County School Board in Jacksonville, Florida. This unique program was started by Colonel Jack D. Howell, USMC (Ret.). With the assistance of Steve Price and Joel Weiner, the program progressed to the next level in March 2008 by becoming a non-profit 501 (C) (3) aerospace education cooperation. Teens-N-Flight is registered in the state of Florida.
Mission:
Through the modem of aerospace education, Teens-N-Flight opens the doors of opportunity by providing flight training and aviation maintenance scholarships to those teens who have lost a parent in war or, is the teen of a parent who was wounded or disabled. Teens-N-Flight also focuses on selected teens who are considered "at risk" or who are from low income families. Teens-N-Flight helps by providing a positive aviation intervention experience.
Concept:
Teenagers of service men and women who have been wounded, disabled, or killed in action often suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome that the sudden, unexpected, life altering tragedy can bring.
Colonel Howell's extensive experience as a Casualty Assistance Officer (CAO), coupled with years of teaching in inner city schools, has given him a unique perspective on working with families and teens who have suffered this sudden tragedy. The CAO becomes immersed in the family crisis from the initial notification until well after the funeral to make sure every 'i' is dotted and every 't' is crossed. However, when this action is completed, the CAO returns to his normal duties and the family is left to grieve and fend for themselves. Teenagers in this situation frequently exhibit withdrawal, distrust, and negative behaviour.
Teens-N-Flight understands the dynamics of this process. By providing positive intervention through free flight training for these teens, Teens-N-Flight helps to promote a behavioral change from negative to positive. Teenagers are provided with mentoring and with a new direction and focus for a possible career in a myriad of occupations within the aerspace industry.
Execution:
Teens-N-Flight utilizes only FAA approved schools (Part 141 & 61) and reimburses these schools for all fuel and aircraft maintenance costs.
Funding:
Funding is accomplished through state and local grants, donations and fund raisers. The program requires that students and parents participate in local fund raisers as it gives them a spirit of ownership in the program. Federal grants and corporate gifts are spread throughout the program unless otherwise directed.
Locations:
Teens-N-Flight has established programs in Jacksonville, FL and Palm Coast, FL and is planning on expanding to Fort Carson, CO and Fort Hood, TX in late Fall/Winter 2009. Ultimately the goal is to expand nationwide.
